I have a texlive installation from portage.
When i compile
Code:
testflow.tex
from http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/testflow/ to create a PDF (TEX->DVI->PS->PDF) it fails the "Palladio font hinting test".

The proposed solution
(page 9 in http://www.ctan.org/get/macros/latex/contrib/IEEEtran/testflow/testflow_doc.pdf)
is to download newer "urw fonts" from ftp://ftp.gnome.ru/fonts/urw/release/ and
overwrite the default in
Code:
/usr/share/fonts/...

Problem 1: The proposed way conflicts with the portage way.
Problem 2: The URL of the urw fonts is outdated.

Question: is there a better way to solve this problem?

If this were preventing me from actually doing something I need to do, I would submit a bug report.

In the meantime, you choices (as far as I know) are:

a) live with it

b) download / overwrite (and do it again if the fonts get updated but still aren't the ones you need).

c) find other alternative fonts that will pass the test (I don't know if that's an option, or if you must have the urw fonts)

d) create a modified ebuild in a local overlay, for the package that owns the fonts in question, which pulls the newer fonts from the source where you got them
