|
|
I have just purchased a WiFi enabled radio which is now set up on my local network. I can configure my laptop under Windows to share my Windows Media Player 11 media library with this new device, which means that I can access my music files residing on my laptop from the radio.
Is there an equivalent that would work for gentoo? I presently use Xfmedia / Xine (under Xfce4) as media player, but Xine does not seem to offer the possibility to share files with another device on the network.
Any ideas?

I'd imagine all you have to do is point the radio to your mp3 (or whatever) music directory. For that, all you need to do is copy the audio over from your windows music directory into a comparable directory for Linux. I have my entire CD collection on this machine in mp3, and I can listen to them from all of the machines on my LAN.
It seems logical.
Blessed be!

It's a Binatone Tranciva IR804 Wi-Fi Internet radio.
To Pappy: it seems logical but it's not that simple. I have two laptops. The one running windows could be detected by the radio once I had enabled the sharing of my music library in Windows Media Player. Then from the radio I can see all the usual sub-categories that are present in Windows Media Player: Video, Music, etc... The laptop running Gentoo is simply not seen by the radio.
I wonder if the radio's software is simply not compatible with Linux...
Now wait a minute! Having had a look again at the radio's user manual, there is another possibility to access your media files from the radio, which is to use 'Shared Folders', probably what you were thinking of, Pappy. I have not enabled anything like that so far on my gentoo box, so I guess I'd have to give it a try. No experience in that though. Should I try samba or stuff like that? I'll have a look at the wiki to see if there is some guidance about sharing folders on a local network, but I'd welcome any pointer.
Thanks! _________________ nichocouk

Samba provides the service known in windows as sharing folders and printers. It's based on the smb protocol. So it seems like that's what you need to do. |

nichocouk,
Since I don't have the unit you describe in front of me, I can't be sure of what it takes to make this unit work. However, if it is tuned to Windoze, then you would need samba support. Fortunately, that's a fairly easy thing to set up. I share my music over both NFS and Samba connections, so it is very doable.
Blessed be!

I've installed samba, but I was a bit scared by the amount of reading in the config file. I'm busy now but I will try to go through it soon...

I have a fairly basic /etc/samba/smb.conf if you need it.
Blessed be!
