Hi

I'd like to make bit-for-bit copies of sections of a large mp3 file without losing any information. Audacity appears to convert everything to its own format when it opens a file and then has to convert it all again to the output format on export. Any ideas?

mp3splt is a command line utility to do just that, by either specifying begin/end times, or a CUE file (a file that specifies the tracks). If you don't have a cue file, you might want to just make one since it will write all your tags for you. It's pretty easy... instructions, and a nice example on the bottom, here: http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Cue_sheet

It also works with oggs, if you use the "vorbis" use flag.

Thanks :) I mainly want to cut up audio streams from .ts files (dvb recordings) and it seems to work just fine for that.

No gentoo ebuild but was easy to install.

They are in portage. Gtk version is for ~arch only. But probably it will work fine, as well.
Code:

media-sound/mp3splt
media-sound/mp3splt-gtk
