Try the system rescue cd http://www.sysresccd.org/Download and use it as though it were a minimal install cd with the gentoo handbook. If you want a 64 bit system enter recue64 at the boot prompt. The module for your NIC is sky2. |

SysrecCD has just 2.6.27 and so does (I believe) the Gentoo snapshots. It seems that some never-heard-before chaox project has a livecd with 2.6.28 in it. Also Ubuntu's and Fedora's latest alphas probably contain some 2.6.29-rc.
You can follow the alternative guide to get things going with a non-gentoo boot cd. |

I know that thare are also many other way to install gentoo.
But any way some months ago gentoo team decide to cut off "automatic install process" (gentoo linux installer) (i agree with this decision) and often minimal liveCD will be done from that date (the last livecd is 2008.0 date july 2008)
So, when i decide to install gentoo, the only think may be helpful for sysadmin is to have a fresh kernel also because hardware server, desktop, laptop and & are newer every day. It's not important the portage but the kernel is necessary to start the system with new driver, and if we want that gentoo will grow at least the kernel.
I say that but keep in mind that where i work i've about 30 server with 5 gentoo server, 2 laptop.

you should not need 2.6.28.
sky2 is in the 2.6.27 (sysresccd) and probably 2.6.25-r7. |

I guess you know about the weekly minimal CDs? They contain stable versions of each package, This would mean kernel 2.6.27 in the latest builds.
You can find them from any mirror's /experimental/<arch>/autobuilds directory. |
