I am having trouble with a vnc/gdm connection. VNC is configured for use with xinetd, and gdm is configured to accept xdmcp connections. Check out the logs:

I will post the xinetd and gdm configuration files if anyone here thinks it is relevant. The logs show that gdm is receiving the request, and that it is responding. But something appears to be interfering with the completion of the connection.
Some more information to ponder:
1) the system is actually a VirtualBox VM. The host is Vista 64. I have used Virtualbox 2.0, 2.02 and 2.04 (for other reasons).
2) Gentoo is compiled as a amd64 system, for the AMD proc.
3) The configuration files, xinetd and custom.conf were taken from a system that does work.
4) sshd does work.
5) I tried enabling the console X server, and trying to connect via XDMCP, the console server fails via XDMCP, but works when used in the "normal" way.
There is something very basic happening here... Please Help!

I wonder why connection is done on for 10.37.32.2 host and not for 127.0.0.1 (localhost).

Sorry for the delay... Here is my xinetd configuration. Xinetd is configured to accept connections from the local network. After your question about localhost vs. the net address, I added the second section for vnc1, and it still did not change anything. The reason for the change was that I have been experimenting for several weeks, and not everything has made it back to a "pristine" state.
How do I configure gdm to accept, (or reject) connections based on IP?

Unfortunately, I have not used gdm in a long-long time and don't have it installed anywere.
Could you temorarily install xdm, so that we can make it work and be sure it is gdm issue ?
My server which has those is down until tomorrow, when I could post what I have.
One think I am suprised not to see in your xinetd files is the path to the fonts in the server_args
I had vnc not starting properly on that. |

I have the opposite problem, haven't seriously worked with xdm... I would be glad for any solution, as the login is functional, not aesthetic.
On one of my installations... on another computer, I think that I did have font issues, if I recall, installing one of the font packs corrected it...

No Joy. Same grey screen. I didn't get any logs with regard to xdm, just the start/stop of the vnc server. How do we turn on logging in xdm?

 Sometimes the obvious is the most difficult... no, I did update /etc/conf.d/xdm as above, and I checked that xdm was running with ps -A. I rebooted the system to make the new settings take effect, no residual configuration issues...
The xdm log has only one line, "XDMCP socket multicast join to 10.37.32.0 failed, errno 22"
Any help?

Ok. Now I am confused. I had to shut down the machine. When I restarted this morning, I was not able to make a connection on port 2, (vnc1 below). I don't think I have been doing any experimentation since the last round...

localhost is defined in hosts.
only_from is commented out in xinetd.conf.
So, for the moment, connections to vnc are giving me a grey screen (no display manager) and connections to vnc1 are returning "connection closed unexpectedly." I'll spend some time and try to figure that one out later today.

Ok. This is true, for some reason it does not accept connections from localhost. It does from 10.37.32.0... I tried ping localhost, and got the correct address, 127.0.0.1, and ping virtualgentoo, which gave me a correct 10.37.32.2. These are defined in /etc/hosts file.
I updated xdm.conf to include "LISTEN 10.37.32.0, 127.0.0.1."
With vnc connecting to virtualgentoo, I get a grey screen. From Localhost, I get a dropped (failed) connection. I have updated vnc and vnc1 to be identical, connecting to virtualgentoo.
So, this brings us back to xdm AND gdm not accepting connections... I think that something else is blocking the ports...but how do I chase it down?

When I do ps -A, I see that xdm is running.
If I do netstat -l localhost, then I get a listing for localhost:xdmcp but the state does not show LISTEN. Netstat -l virtualgentoo, also shows localhost:xdmcp, state does not show LISTEN.
xdm.log does not show any activity other then the one line that I reported earlier. It should report startups and shutdowns, correct?
Maybe this tells me two things, one that the display manager wants to listen on localhost (127.0.0.1), and two, it is not being allowed to listen...
So I should check the system processes, and see if anything like a firewall has been started...?

But in the original log you did have gdm getting requests ?
I checked what netstat -l localhost gives on my machine, that runs vnc server through xdm
udp 0 0 localhost:xdmcp *:*
withouth LISTEN as well. |

Then this should affect everyone. I haven't touched those files, wouldn't know what to do if I could even find them....? That's a weak argument. You have a somewhat special virtual machine configuration, which other people don't have

One thing you can try to do is to make xdm work without vnc. If you enable the local server
uncomment the last line in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers to read
:0 local /usr/bin/X
does this work ?

Under gdm, I had the "standard" console server working over remote desktop. When connected outside of of XDMCP, (whatever method it uses) the display works fine... If I try to connect using the chooser and XDMCP, the result is the same as with the vnc server. I will retry it over the next day or so and report back again.
I've used this setup before, I had a dedicated gentoo server (which was retired) with this setup, and I am using colinux-gentoo with the same setup...Come to think of it, I had a lot of trouble getting the colinux installation to work, which is why one of the first things I had done is take the working setup from colinux, and using those config files on this setup...
I'll follow up in a day or so.

Ok...
I configured Xservers to start Xvnc as a local X server. It works fine with no additional "tuning."
Xdm is functional, Xvnc is functional, vnc is functional, at least for a local (non xdmcp) connection...

There is interisting option 'once' (to kill vnc session on exit), but look at the last two. I remember Xvnc not working not finding rgb file, and

sorry, that option tells that the fonts are served by xfs server (which should be running). Without it you should specify some font paths
explicitly, like -fp /usr/share/fonts/75dpi or so |
