| Here's what's going on: I emerge rsync and in the middle of it, I get booted back to the gdm. I don't see any error messages whatsoever. I just found out that doing an etc-update is a bad idea, so I'm thinking that's the problem but I don't know what to do to fix it. Anyone got any suggestions? |

I'd look in dmesg and /var/log/messages to see if anything gets outputted when X goes down. Also, try running something other than GNOME - maybe good ol' TWM - to try to narrow down the cause, then try remerging it. Maybe use more conservative USE flags that time around.
