|
|
I tried to install gentoo 1.4 from livecd (basic and x86) in vmware (on windows) and on my Sony Vaio Z600TEK and always get kernel panics.
hardware specs Vaio: pentium3 700 MHz, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD
hardware specs pc: pentium4 2,66 GHz, 1024 MB RAM, U160 SCSI, GF4680
In vmware (on windows) I have used
Code: | nofb dokeymap cdcache |
and on my Vaio
Code: | nofb dokeymap cdcache noacpi nopcmcia noraid ide1=0x180,0x386 |
(ide1=0x180,0x386 is for cdrom)
On my Sony Vaio I get the following info at kernel panic:
Code: | Process hwsetup (pid: 640, stackpage=c7661000) |
vmware problem I don't know at the moment.
with gentoo-1.4_rc4 all was working fine without problems.
Someone knows what the problem can be? Or is there a known kernel problem on the livecds?
Thanks for help
Lobanak
p.s.: if more info is needed, I can look for more info.
p.s.2.: md5sums of cds were ok |

did you do an md5 checksum on the copy of the iso you downloaded to make sure that it was not currupted?

yep. Look in my first post at bottom at p.s.2:
Just tried again in vmware with the x86 livecd. I can boot without problem, I can unpack the stage3 package and I can unpack the portage snapshot. Then I wanted to see the directory and typed 'ls' and got a kernel panic. kernel options were 'nofb dokeymap cdcache'.
At the second test, I used 'gentoo dokeymap cdcache' and also got a kernel panic. This time after unpacking stage3 and portage and then tried to create the directory for the distfiles under /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage.

I'm not using any options on mine. Just the default options. When it gives the error about vga modes, I just hit space and continue. The only problem I've really had is coming out of X sometimes leaves me with a blank screen. alt-f1 ,f2 ,f3 etc don't bring it back. But I can still reboot just fine, I just can't see what I'm typing. Really not that big of a deal though. |

Tried again with the pentium3 livecd. STill the same when using 'gentoo dokeymap cdcache" as kernel options.
After tried with 'gentoo dokeymap' all looks ok in vmware. So I think it's a problem with the 'cdcache' option of the kernel where the whole install system is loaded into the memory.
I try on my notebook also without 'cdcache' and if all works fine, it must be a problem with that.
I edit this message then when I have more info from my Sony Vaio Notebook.
