Hi
I have been having a problem with MPD in that whenever I am listening to music through it and load a webpage with a Flash applet in it, MPD stops playback as Flash steals the alsa device (or something like that).
I have alsa set up to output through my maudio audiophile 2496 through the spdif output, but I do not completely understand alsa so the problem confuses me. Other programs can play audio simultaneously, including for example MPlayer, Amarok and a flash applet, without problems.
My asound.conf:
Code:
 pcm.!default {
   type plug
   slave.pcm audiophile_dmix
   ttable.0.0 1 # H/W 1
   ttable.1.1 1 # H/W 2
   ttable.0.8 1 # S/PDIF L
   ttable.1.9 1 # S/PDIF R
 }
 pcm.analog {
   type plug
   slave.pcm audiophile
   ttable.0.0 1 # H/W 1
   ttable.1.1 1 # H/W 2
 }
 pcm.analog_dmix {
   type plug
   slave.pcm audiophile_dmix
   ttable.0.0 1 # H/W 1
   ttable.1.1 1 # H/W 2
 }
 pcm.digital {
   type plug
   slave.pcm audiophile
   ttable.0.8 1 # S/PDIF L
   ttable.1.9 1 # S/PDIF R
 }
 pcm.digital_dmix {
   type plug
   slave.pcm audiophile_dmix
   ttable.0.8 1 # S/PDIF L
   ttable.1.9 1 # S/PDIF R
 }
 pcm.audiophile_dmix {
   type dmix
   ipc_key 1024
   slave {
     pcm "audiophile"
     period_time 0
     period_size 2048
     buffer_size 65536
     format S32_LE
   }
 }
 pcm.audiophile {
   type hw
   card 0
   device 0
 }

And my mpd.conf

Code:

########################## AUDIO OUTPUT ########################
#
# MPD supports many audio output types, as well as playing
# through multiple audio outputs at the same time.  You can
# specify one or more here.  If you don't specify any, MPD will
# automatically scan for a usable audio output.
#
# See <http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/Configuration#Audio_Outputs>
# for examples of other audio outputs.
#
# An example of an ALSA output:
#
audio_output {

        name                    "SoundCard"
   device         "default"
}

############################# MIXER ############################
#
# MPD needs to know what mixer settings to change when you
# adjust the volume.  If you don't specify one here, MPD will
# pick one based on which ones it was compiled with support for.
#
# An example for controlling an ALSA mixer:
#
mixer_type                      "alsa"
mixer_device                    "default"

#mixer_device                    "/dev/mixer"
#mixer_control                   "PCM"

# If you want MPD to adjust the volume of audio sent to the
# audio outputs, you can tell it to use the software mixer:

# Sets the pre-amp used for files that have ReplayGain tags.
#

###################### CHARACTER ENCODINGS #####################
#
# If file or directory names do not display correctly, then you
# may need to change this.  In most cases it should be either
# "ISO-8859-1" or "UTF-8".  You must recreate your database
# after changing this (use mpd --create-db).
#
filesystem_charset "UTF-8"
#
# The encoding that ID3v1 tags should be converted from.
#
#id3v1_encoding                  "ISO-8859-1"
#
################################################################

######################### OTHER OPTIONS ########################
#
# Try disabling this if you have MP3s which appear to end
# abruptly.  If this solves the problem, it is highly
# recommended that you fix your MP3s with vbrfix (available from
# <http://www.willwap.co.uk/Programs/vbrfix.php>), at which
# point you can re-enable support for gapless MP3 playback.
#
gapless_mp3_playback             "yes"
#
# Enable this if you wish to use your MPD created playlists in
# other music players.
#
#save_absolute_paths_in_playlists "no"
#
# A list of tag types that MPD will scan for and make available
# to clients.
#
metadata_to_use                  "artist,album,title,track,genre,comment"
#
################################################################

MPD does not output an error into mpd.error.log when the audio stops.
Any help would be appreciated as I can't get my head round this :(
Cheers!

Try setting the !default slave.pcm to "hw:0,0" and see if it works. It is not a solution, but maybe you can isolate the problem. I have a similar problem when using dmix, but my asound.conf is simplier and as alsa comes with a dmixer by default I don't need to add one.

I am not entirely sure I understand the logic behind changing this, but I tried setting that and it made no difference to the problem, and also other applications would not play sound together eg, if amarok is playing a track flash wont be able to play sound.
