It seems that KDE 4.2 was marked incompatible with the stable 3.5.9. So if you want both 3.5 and 4.2, you have to upgrade to the testing version of 3.5, i.e. 3.5.10. I am running 4.2.0, but I also use some programs that require kdelibs-3.x.x. It works for me with 3.5.10, but I don't have a KDE 3 desktop running.
