Got the same problem, allthough xorg.log says, it loaded dpms ok. xbacklight doesn't work, either. I've got this problem with my sony-laptop, according to some googleing, the problem is known and results from changes in the .29-rcX kernel, so should be fixed with the final .29 (I hope!).

Now that you mention it, xbacklight doesn't work either. For some reason Fn+Brightness keys do work, but afaik these are handled by ACPI (or the BIOS) on Lenovo notebooks.

Yep, that are ACPI-events and yes, they work for me, too. If you want, have a search on the LKML, there've been some posts concerning this topic, together with some patches. Haven't tested them, yet, but I'll guess it won't be too long for the final .29, so I just live with it.

How about suspend/hibernation and xrandr? (hibernation is a priority for me and working randr is also higher on the list then 3d perf (but I sure would love to be able to run a game with wine or at least in the latest virtual box))

cant resume after hibernation. xrandr doesn't work at all.

Haven't installed intel-2.6.2, still at 2.6.1, but xrandr and suspend2ram work flawless on my machine with xorg-server-1.6 and .29-rc6. Got some errors in your logs?

Because I found in kde4.2 the desktop effects would for some
reason get "sluggish" after resuming from hibernation, I tried
xorg-server 1.6.

The difference is incredible. Not only is the hibernation problem
completely fixed everything runs smooth as silk.

This on a thinkpad x300 with intel GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller, mesa 7.3, intel 2.6.1 (basically everything
from masked portage but xorg-server and randrproto from the
overlay).

OK, xorg-server-1.6 makes compositing with OpenGL work like a charm. This is a very good update. :)
Next, I will try Intel-2.6.2 and see what happens.

Just updated to intel-2.6.2.

Suspend works perfectly, both from X and from console. Performance is good.

A little bug(?): when switching from X to console and then back to X, I need to first move the mouse, else keyboard-input isn't possible - with dwm as wm, if that should matter.

Still, the backlight-problem remains, hope that gets fixed with the next kernel-rc.

Ctrl+Alt+Backspace is not working with xorg-server-1.6 ... Anyone else having the same issue.

That is the new default, security-by-obscurity :)
Enable "zapping" in xorg.conf to get back the old behaviour.

Option "DontZap" "false" in Serverflags for the normal behaviour ... thanks for the tip. :)

On another note, intel-2.6.2 completely screwed up compositing in KDE - switched back to 2.6.1 for now

.29-rc7 boots fine, xbacklight-problem still exists. Next stop, new intel-driver.

FWIW, this has nothing to do with intel. It's an xorg thing.

Then, I guess, it is time to try again and hopefully not fail miserably at this attempt

hey, failing miserably is what Gentoo is all about ... and then you figure it
out. Bit of a rush :)

Heck, we're not *buntu-people talking smack about how f*cking awesome feature X introduced with *buntu Y is, we're Gentoo, living on the edge and friggin our systems just to make sure, the *buntards got something to talk about every half-year.

Canonical should pay us for doing the testdriving. They are just picking the final working product and god knows how they do it, that *buntu still always sucks
