nautilus is using 99-100% cpu (of one core) immediately upon loading gnome, even without a nautilus window open. Neither killing it nor disabling preview functionality (which has worked for others with a similar problem) solves the problem. It seems to make my system slightly unstable too, as top just locked up on me when I tried to ctrl-z, and started eating up 99-100% of my other core.

I'm not sure what would have caused this... So here's what I updated to that last emerge -avuDN world
Code:
media-libs/openjpeg-1.3
media-libs/libpng-1.2.35
sys-devel/m4-1.4.1
app-text/poppler-0.10.4
sys-apps/busybox-1.13.2
gnome-extra/gucharmap-2.22.3
sys-apps/texinfo-4.13
x11-misc/shared-mime-info-0.51
dev-util/dialog-1.1.20080819
sys-apps/attr-2.4.43
x11-libs/pixman-0.14.0
x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.5
sys-apps/man-pages-3.18
dev-lang/ruby-1.8.6_p287-r5
net-libs/xulrunner-1.9.0.6
app-text/poppler-bindings
www-client/mozilla-firefox-3.0.6
media-gfx/eog-2.22.3-r3
x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev-2.1.3
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.35
media-gfx/imagemagick-6.4.8.3
x11-wm/compiz-0.7.8-r3      #from desktop-effects overlay
gnome-base/gdm-2.20.9-r1
media-libs/xine-lib-1.1.16.2
www-client/epiphany-2.22.3-r2

Any ideas what what might be the culprit?

This sounds familiar to this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-741482.html
As far as I recall, it didn't only affect CTRL+C, but also CTRL+Z.

So try masking x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-180.35 .
