|
|
I am having trouble with the stage 3 install. Actually this may be something very simple. I tried extracting the stage 3 install from my mounted cd using:
tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage3-athlon-xp-20030727.tar.bz2
At first it looks like the extraction is working just fine. However, towards the end I see a lot of messages similar to the following:
./usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2.3/include/g++-v3/bits/boost_concept_check.h
tar: ./usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2.3/include/g++-v3/bits/boost_concept_check.h: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
tar: Skipping to next header
./usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2.3/include/g++-v3/stdexcept
tar: ./usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.2.3/include/g++-v3/stdexcept: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes
tar: Skipping to next header
I figured maybe my iso was bad (though I had done an md5sum on it) so I tried wget'ing the stage straight from my LiveCD. I extracted the stage using the same parameters as above and I get the same tar errors.
Up to this point I have been following, step for step, the install instructions at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml. I am at step 8 where all the file systems have been mounted and mnt/gentoo is relatively empty.
Any advice would be very welcome. I have been using Debian for some time and am very excited about the change to experience Gentoo. |

One other thing... I doubt this is related. I purchased my Athlon a year or two ago. Its a 1.333Ghz and as far as I recall it didn't have anything special in its name like XP MP or Duron. So I am guessing the Athlon XP source may be the wrong source to use? Which source should I be using? |

The tarball is probably all right (the CPU you have is probably an Athlon XP). And even if you were using the wrong tarball, it wouldn't be during the extraction that it should fail.
Do you have sufficient space on the disk on which you are extracting the tarball? |

OK, you were right! I managed to slip up at some point as I've been trying different stages. This time I forgot to mount my partition to /mnt/gentoo so I ran out of space.
I would like to say that I greatly appreciate your taking time to answer my question even though it was obviously an embaracing mistake I made. |

be careful...
If you're already done and everything is working, cool... but if not, you need to be sure that you're using the plain i686 stuff if your athlon isn't an XP. They're not really backwards compatible.
Just a suggestion |

And btw an athlon 1333mhz isn't a athlon XP.

Yep, I learned my lesson. I ended up going with the stage 1 tarball (which was 386) and then compiled everything with -march=athlon and all is well. I will have to grab that i686 iso next time . |
