Can't update world :(

I've been using Gentoo for years, but I've never gotten very deep into emerge because I've never had to. I issue a command, it complies, and I'm happy.

However, it seems the more time goes on the more often I find myself having to figure out why emerge is now not "just working", and it's getting worse and worse. I now cannot update world and I have no idea why or how to work around it.

I suspect it has something to do with KDE 3.5 and KDE 4.2. I want KDE 3.5 completely off of my system, including everything that could possibly pull it in. I want KDE 4.2 installed on the system using the same scheme Gentoo has been using for years (ie, it's its own folder in /usr).

The 4.1 and 4.2 sets of KDE packages block each other when the kdeprefix USE flag is disabled, as indicated by the output you posted, enable the kdeprefix USE flag globally and rebuild your current KDE install and any dependent packages.

This forum software is starting to bug the crap out of me.

Apparently there was too much in the code tags but the preview showed it correctly.

The problem I was asking about wasn't the blocked packages, although the eix link you gave me helped resolve that problem. It had to do with conflicts, which I've pasted twice now.

As for the USE and ACCEPT_KEYWORDS, those are currently required for KDE 4.2 (for me at least), which is the reason for them. As I said, I've been using Gentoo for years, I don't actually run them when updating the world.

Here's my newest attempt. Instead of emitting the update world command I'm doing it specifically for KDE 4.2

I guess the real reason I posted here was to get ideas on how to avoid this in the future. I understand having to manually emerge KDE since I emerged it using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS and specific USE flags, but for what can I do to avoid conflicts such as the above? Surely manually touching all of these packages is not a normal thing for portage now. In the past it's hardly ever an issue, but it seems like it happens more often now.
