Hello all has anyone managed to get genkernel to work on there system i have tried with both the x86 and Pentium4 discs and neither will do it the x86 gets to make modules then says :aborting the pentium4 discs get a little further they do the image then something pops up saying mv: couldnt stat System.map no such file but it completes i checked the /boot directory and there they are but if i go through the rest of the install when it comes to rebooting and getting the grub screen as soon as it tries to boot it says about the kernel not found initrd not found or it says something like that it has to be a direct link or bootblock any help on this would be much appreciated as i dont want to give up and go back to windows :) the system specs are

Pentium 4 2.00ghz
512mb DDR
60gb seagate barracuda
Intel 845g (brookdale) chipset
Intel graphics (onboard)
SB live 5.1
and other usb devices not connected until i can get it going :P

The "Couldn't stat System.map" is normal -- this warning will disappear when you already have a System.map in /boot I guess.

Is your /boot mounted when you issue "genkernel"?
Did you substitute "KV" with the real kernel version?

With grub, you can use tabcompletion if it complaints. Perhaps you can try that... are your (hdX,Y) settings correct?

i set it up as per the instructions i.e (hd0,0) and i know this is a bit of a silly question but when u say tab completion u mean u can get grub to find the files like if u type part of the name then hit tab??

Yup. When you boot your system and receive the grub prompt, you can select your kernel and press "e" to edit it. You'll see two to three lines that you will remember from the grub.conf file. Select the "kernel (hd..." line and press "e" again (again to edit it).

Then you can delete the line and start with "kernel (hd0,0)/" and then press tab. It'll show you all possible options (not necessarily kernelimages).

Note: anything you do at the grub prompt is not permanent: editing a line is only for that session; after rebooting, the line is back to the default state.
