I have been running VMWare 4/4.5 on my Gentoo installation for some time now, with XP as the client. Last night I decided to see how VMWare would work under the Mandrake 10 CE installation I was trying out, and now it appears that I have really dorked up my virtual disk for VMWare.

My VMWare Virtual disk is setup on it's own partition on my system, and was mounted as /xp in Gentoo. I mounted that partition under the same /xp I created in Mandrake, then setup a new Virtual Machine (in Mandrake) and pointed it to the disk file. It found the installed windows fine (or so I thought), but was running really slowly. So I logged back out of the VM and rebooted back into Gentoo to get some work done (I have Quicken 2004 installed in the XP partition and had to pay bills).

However, when I got back into Gentoo and tried to startup VMWare, It started complaining about that it could not find the disk. I checked and my /xp partition was mounted, but all the owners had switched from my username to what I guess was the UID that accessed it in Mandrake (501). I chowned the files back to my userid, and restarted vmware, and it seemed to work ok, until I got into quicken and found that everything was dated from a few months back. Further checking confirmed that the manchine was in a state from late February.

I looked again in my /xp folder, and saw that I had matching REDO files for all of my vmdk (disk) files. My guess is that my updated info is in the REDO files, but I cannot seem to find anyway to commit them to my main vmdk.

Does anyone have any ideas on how this could be accomplished?

Thanks,

Jason
