|

I am using xscreensaver 5.08 and sometimes when I return to my computer after being away for a while, I notice increased CPU usage.
For example, I run "top" and I see spheremonics on the top of the list with CPU usage at 40% of one core! I didn't even know what spheremonics was, but I ran pstree and I got something like this.
Code: | | `-xscreensaver-+-antinspect
| |-2*[antspotlight]
| |-2*[atlantis]
| |-blocktube
| |-boxed
| |-gears
| |-glmatrix
| |-glsnake
| |-lament
| |-menger
| |-spheremonics
|
So I guess the xscreensaver process continues to make complex calculations about something it wants to show on my screen, even though it shows nothing? (!) Has anybody else had the same problem? |

It's possible that particular screensaver isn't working properly and gets stuck in an infinite loop causing the CPU usage. Try disabling those affected screensavers and see if it helps. I've always had to disable most of the screensavers, because in my experience they're great at killing X11. |

This occured here while my box was using the buggy nvidia-driver-180.35 (now package.masked). I use random screensavers, and xscreensaver didn't killed the current proccess before loading a new screensaver.
Reverting/Upgrading (eg. to 180.37) did solve the problem. _________________ Laptop : Gentoo ~amd64
