well, i've been using gentoo for all my boxes at work that i've had to do up until now.... well, our administratoe just decided to really go linux all the way and drop MS crap for the most part. so, he went to a redhat conference and got hooked on the whole linux idea. the sad part of this is that he wants all our boxes in the future to be running redhat instead of other distros....

makes one quite sad...

it'll help with the turn around time but it sure is sad as can be... is there a portage release that i can put on redhat?

I think you'd be best going with RedCarpet on RedHat, package managment for RPMs.

Well, the "rpm" command is used to install/uninstall RPMs. Be sure to read the whole man because it can be complicated at first (dependancies, etc.)

Check out apt-rpm. I've used it before and it's very nice.

Ximian's RedCarpet was originally GUI only, but now they have a console version of it as well. Also, apt-rpm is very good. It's Debian's apt ported to work with RPM's and from what I've heard works just as well when sorting out dependencies.

When considering production machines, people will generally go for RedHat, because they provide excellent support and are based out of the US. In Germany, SuSE is the powerhouse. Anyway, by support I mean, paid support. RedHat has a very knowledgable team of support help that can help fix and debug problems with your OS.

If you are experienced (professional experience) enough to debug and secure Linux on your own, then you'd be in a position to Admin an entire site yourself and would most likely be allowed to make that decision, and you would most likely not choose RedHat in light of the fact that you don't need the support. But that is not the general case. Management likes someone to provide "support"

Who cares about Red Carpet...

Go into your bosses office, plead Gentoo's case.

If he refuses, start hitting yourself and throwing yourself about the room Fight Club stylee, and prearrange to have a friend walk in on the two of you - making sure he's holding you by the neck at the time.

Then you can blackmail him.

In comparison to me you are the luckiest man on earth ;) The IT-Department at my Company (University Medical Centre of Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany) doesn't want to her anything about Linux. MS everywhere. They installed Win2k on my Desktop (PII 333, 64MB RAM)...my boss is now complaining about my speed of work. I have to use MS-Visio from time to time: When I apply a very little change on the drawings that box here needs about 1 minute to finish all calculations. - I WANT MY NT4 BACK OR LINUX ON THIS BOX !

First, let me say that you are indeed lucky that you don't have to use Windows. However, is there any chance that they would let you dual boot? I know that would be annoying, but at least then you could try Gentoo and then use Red Hat when necessary. Ok, that might become really annoying, but it's a thought.
