|
|
i read the installation handbook and it is very confusing to me if all those steps have to be performed if i run the installer from LiveCD.
i actually installed Gentoo with the installer but it seems a lot of things are missing. i had selected all the packages and available options to load at install but i only have a terminal when i boot from HDD. also my NICs werent discovered but i fixed that. i had to emerge gentoo-sources.
i remember selecting all these things on my installation...why arent they taking effect.
help pls

The installer is broken and will (I'm pretty sure) be broken for the next two decades. Install by using the handbook and if needed, ask specific questions, that'll work for sure. |

ditto that response.
I have never successfully used the GUI installer from 2004.0 up. Besides, tell me the last time you learned anything about your systems internals by running a GUI installer? That's the real benefit of running the installation from terminal.
Don't be afraid of the command line. Starting to get familiar with it during the installation will give you a huge sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence in the bedroom. |

In fact, use the command line installation, it's the only way to install Gentoo |

++ to manual install
It's really not that hard. Gentoo was my first distro and I managed to install it by carefully reading the handbook and using some brains.
The only thing that was a bit tricky was making the kernel.
I dunno if genkernel generates a really good one.
If you run into problems with the configuration of your kernel just ask. There's loads of people around who're willing to help. _________________ Kali Ma

In fact, after your first installation of Gentoo, you will realize that you have learned a lot of new stuff about Linux in general. |

Genkernel is basically a fancy editor for .config, so it's as good or bad as the
config setup. I find it pretty straightforward to use, though I have a small
script that calls it with the standard arguments which I can never remember.
