PostPosted: Fri Mar 13, 2009 3:08 pm    Post subject: X will not start becuase of freetype Reply with quote

I keep getting error when X tries to start due to i think freetype. Has anyone seen this before, or does anyone have any help for me on this? I have been googleing and reading for the past week to no success. Tried talking to other gentoo users also, but they didn't know. Suposedly some of the forums said that this newer version of X dosent even use freetype. THANKS FOR THE HELP. :D

/etc/X11/xorg.conf (note i have the keyboard and mouse fix in it under ServerFlags and i have completely deleted freetype out of it so..)

that xorg log doesn't really show anything of use... i don't see a single error at all. (EE lines)

how do you start x? can you give us more info about what is happening before you outright blame freetype?

here is the exert of code from that that has the error
Code:

(EE) LoadModule: Module freetype does not have a freetypeModuleData data object.
(II) UnloadModule: "freetype"
(II) Unloading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libfreetype.so
(EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (invalid module, 0)

i have just built a new system so i start x with the command "startx" and i always get a freetype error

I also get the EE freetype error when it tries to load a non-existent module. I'm running the ~x86 packages for Xorg-server 1.5.3, and I only started to get these errors in the last week. That said, xdm starts up just fine for me.

EDIT: Incidentally, the following lines:
Code:
(II) "extmod" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.
(II) "dbe" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.
(II) "glx" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.
(II) "freetype" will be loaded by default.
(II) "record" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.
(II) "dri" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file.

mean that you can remove the corresponding lines from your module section. I think all you need to keep is:

Code:
Section "Module"
   Load  "xtrap"
EndSection

Just a housekeeping item.

You might be having the same problem as me. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-745565.html

Can you ssh in from another computer as root, and try
Code:

/etc/init.d/xdm restart

if X comes up, we have the same problem.

Do you have an /etc/conf.d/xdm file, and have you edited it to point to your preferred display manager?

I'm running a disc-intensive process right now, so I can't run equery on my own and see if /etc/conf.d/xdm is part of the xdm package (I suspect it is). Try emerge -pv xdm (and the display manager of the desktop you favor, such as gdm or kdm) and see if you already have it

Yeah, probably. I can't really work out your settings in depth since I have no experience with VMware. I take it that's why you're using the keyboard and mouse drivers instead of evdev.

Just to check... you have an .xinitrc file that contains something like 'exec startkde'?
