|
|
I am running 2.6.0-test3-mm1 with as io scheduler, and I find that my system works better with the con scheduler tweaks removed.
On a load of:-
- a kernel recompile (nice 10)
- mencoder recompressing an avi (nice 10)
- bittorrent downloading (nice 10)
- mplayer playing an avi (normal priority)
- misc apps gkrellm2, gabber, gnome-terminals...
Without con everything hums along, and skipping around the video in mplayer is instant. With con, the mencoder is running at half speed and runs in spurts (about 1 second spurts), and skipping around the video has a 5 second delay each time. I think the problems may be related to disk access.
Anyone else? _________________ - Exner (Antony Suter) |

I'm using the anticipatory scheduler (elevator=as) and my system runs smoothly. I never change the nice settings of anything.
Maybe you should try to not re-nice the processes under as, it should really not be necessary.
I'm also running 2.6.0-test3-mm1...

Yeah. Rencicing stuff uses to be really necessarily back in 2.4 to keep things smooth. There were even loonies who reniced X to -9 to get better performance (now X at -9 works the way it should, everything else gets starved) try not rencing and report back. _________________ Think about your breathing.

I've run the same test as my original post on the +con-sched kernel, but with no renice-ing of any apps. The foreground mplayer now skips around the video instantly, and the mencoder runs fine.
A seperate problem i've noticed between the two kernels is that with con-sched, the bittorrent gui dialog does not initialise or update properly, in certain cases. _________________ - Exner (Antony Suter) |
