Editplus. I run Editplus under Wine (since it's a Win only application). Editplus is great, beacuse with PHP (Which I mostly use it for), there are some really nifty features.
First of all, the syntax highlighting is like none other. You'll have to see it for yourself.
Its built in FTP function is great. You can enter the details of your ftp server, and upload scripts straight the web, rather than having to save it, and then upload it externally. This makes it so much easier for debugging, espicially with web based languages.
The whole feel of it is generally nicer than other code editors. It feels lighter, as though they are not trying to give you anything unneccessary. I would reccomend you try it. I think you can download it from http://editplus.com, and obviously, you'll need Wine too. It doesnt run completely sound under Wine, there are still some areas in which things arent smooth, however the program more than makes up for this. Hopefully one day they will release a Linux version... _________________ Thanks,

Holy resurrected threads, Batman!
Anyway, I use vim. For everything. On all platforms. Nothing else I have tried (and believe me, I have tried a lot) come even close to its feeling of "right-ness" you get when using it. Not nedit or Kate or scite or kdevelop or emacs or notepadplus or pfe or any damn IDEs. Just vim.
(I really don't get along with IDEs at all. We have serious and regular disagreements which inevitably end in fisticuffs). _________________ screenshots

Thanks for that link. Vim does look rather good. Just out of interest, does it have a built in FTP function (Where I can save files directly to the web, without saving locally)? _________________ Thanks,

I used emacs and xemacs for around 5-6 years. One day I realized I spent a lot of time trying to make it behave like kate. I switched to kate, eclipse and eric (depending on the language). I never looked back.
VI and Emacs are very powerfull, but If I gave that to my user interfaces teacher and she rated me from 0 to 5, I would probably get a -3.
Even after tweaking every little setting in emacs, I found myself using perl and sed to do the complicated stuff. Emacs documentation is very poor. The API is complicated and has several ways to do the same but just a little different. I never knew how to change the menu or toolbar, and stuff as simple as putting the line numbers on the left, required a lot of time on research. Kate offered all the features that I wanted in a much simpler interface.
I can honestly say I am much more productive now that I don't have to program the editor. |
