do not use the 2008.0 cd's unless you enjoy confusion, pain, and suffering
better alternatives:
system rescue cd, http://www.sysresccd.org/Download gentoo based has gui and browser is very up to date
any others distro's livecd, if current and with gui and browser
gentoo cd from the gentoo mirrors http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml found under /releases/<arch>/autobuilds
Whatever choice of cd do get the stage 3 tarball from the autobuilds.
old kernels want to call ide hard drives hdx, scsi and sata hard drives sdx
new kernels want to call all hard drives sdx, the sdx driver is more efficient and is the better choice for ide/ata/pata drives |

AFAIK it does not depend on the kernel version. There are two different libraries that dial with IDE/SCSI devices, and that is why different names could appear. But I'm not sure, please correct me if I am wrong. |

Alatar is right, depending on the library used, a hard drive, be it an ide or a sata one will appear either as sda or hda
In the kernel :
ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->
and
Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers --->
are responsible for the type of device you'll see. _________________ "Please, forgive my bad English"

You should use SATA and PATA if you can. It's the new standard. |
