Ok, I just installed gentoo for the first time. I followed all the installation directions, but all I get is the command prompt. How do I get to a gui? I specified it to go to Gnome in the config file, even though I want KDE, but it just goes to the command prompt. How do I get it to start up KDE when I start up the computer?
Also, I messed up my grub configuration and I have to edit it every time to get it to start up, how do I fix that and make the changes stay?
Thank's for any help |

Easiest way I have found to get into a gui is to emerge gdm. It will give you a nice login screen like XP does and will let you choose what gui you want from what you have installed. After you emerge it, run gdm to make sure it works, then look in the /etc/rc.conf file for the line DISPLAYMANAGER="xdm" and change xdm to gdm. Then run rc-update add xdm default. That will make it start on boot.
To fix your grub problem, edit the file /boot/grub/grub.conf. |

Remember, this is a newb we're talking to...
In order to edit your grub config, first do:
# mount /boot
In order to get a GUI, generally you do
# emerge kde
or
# emerge gnome
or whatever. That installs them.
$ startx
Should run them, but GDM gives you a cool login screen. Do this:
# emerge gdm
And then this:
# /etc/init.d/xdm start _________________ Tactless

Please search before posting. You would have found a plethora of links to the Desktop Configuration Guide.
