I have just noticed that when I ssh into my laptop and start an ncurses application like "mc", the box-drawing characters are now all rendered as "xxxx" and "qqqq"! Although still usable it certainly isn't pretty; any idea how to fix this? It must be the result of a recent update and only happens in one direction. Also the characters are correct when the apps are used directly on the laptop. Both systems are set up with LANG="en_GB.utf8".

This is nothing new. I've seen it before. Might be depend on the terminal you are using. I've never bothered trying to fix it.

I usually use KDE Konsole so I just tried xterm and the problem went away. Started a new copy of Konsole and the problem also has gone. Looks like something had munged that particular bash session. Oh well... _________________ "Ship me somewheres east of Suez, where the best is like the worst,

I had a similar issue when using ssh to my remote servers using screen. The solution ended up being setting screen to UTF8. |
