Having used the gentoo 1.4_RC4 stage 1 only iso to install gentoo on all my desktops many times, I downloaded gentoo-basic-1.4-20030806.iso last night to give it a shot. This was an absolute failure :/ I'm a bit confused as to whats up with the releases and discs available at the moment, but according to me gentoo-basic-1.4-20030806.iso is supposed to be stable? Or am I in the wrong?

The md5 checksums that I checked matched perfectly after the download finished, burning it to a cdr and trying to use it produced these problems:

a) Boot hangs at USB / PCI hotplugging load. I've seen a bug report about this, but, have anyone figured out how to run around it yet perhaps, or whats the problem? This happened on both my VIA KT133 chipset, my NForce2 chipset and my SIS chipset Laptop all with nothing connected to USB. Anyhow, booting with the argument to disable it, got my a bit further...

b) No support for my AMDtek AN983 NIC, neither my NForce2 board's onboard NIC Come on :/ this might be because of disableing hotplugging?

c) When simply trying to reboot by typing "reboot" I get the following:

* Remounting remaining filesystems readonly... <<< this fails.

/sbin/rc: line 151: /bin/sync: No such file or directory
/sbin/rc: line 151: /bin/sync: No such file or directory
/sbin/rc: line 1: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory
/sbin/rc: line 153: /sbin/sulogin: No such file or directory
/sbin/rc: line 6: /sbin/reboot: No such file or directory

this was really not very amusing :(

this also happens on all my boxes...

Anyone? *looks towards heavens or hell!?*

Thank you!!!

The same problems happened to me during the initial installation on an IBM ThinkPad T22; which leads me to believe it is not platform independant.

The solution for me was to load the kernel with the following parameters, such as:

Quote:
: gentoo nodetect dopcmcia

The 'nodetect' disabled the USB/PCI Hotplugging and the 'dopcmcia' was for installation over my wireless network. As a side note, I have a fully installed version now and have USB/PCI Hotplugging installed as an rc-script and it works just fine.

Thanks!

Mike

Gentoo 1.4-final seems to be really unstable on many systems after booting from the basic installation CD. I tried to boot this version on 3 different notebook models (Dell and Compaq), and all hang after booting without any command line options when typing "ifconfig". When using "gentoo nodetect", it works perfectly. So, I assume, that it has something to do with the autodetection script at startup.

All these systems boot fine without any problems with gentoo 1.4rc4 without using any command line options.

Well, it boots fine on some of my machines, but on certain ones it just wont' budge. Disabling pci and usb and hotpluging together with autodetect helps getting past that though, however, its still a nuisance.

I would *really* be glad to see this fixed asap, also the reboot thing :/

Weird...

i've installed Gentoo Linux 1.4 final on 3 mashines now, and not even a singel one complained.

If the 1.4 final dont work, the just use 1.4_rc 4 instead.
portage will update all the packages during the bootstrap / emerge system.
