I'm stepping over to gentoo. Ofcourse that means searching for alternative programs. ONe such is something for php/mysql web editing. I make and maintain sites now using phpeditor. So not a wysiwyg thing.

What can I use for gentoo? I run fvwm window so also program that later on. I'm thinking of vi(m) which has a nice curve. So for the smaller things i'm going to use that but will it really cost time only to use that when I rebuild a php website with it?

What about netbeans? This is for php, java, and such.

Any others?

If GUI, then Bluefish is a nice editor. I also use Geany sometimes. And there is Quanta - didn't try yet.

Quanta is one of the best dedicated webdev apps on linux. It uses kdelibs-3, and some people don't like that relatively heavy dependency (unless you already use kde3). There is no kde4 version of Quanta yet.

Vim of course is an excellent choice. I would recommend cream, which is an easy to use graphical shell around vim, making it behave more like a regular editor. And you still keep the option of using "expert mode" for when you want the normal vim behavior. This way you can ease into using vim as you learn.

Other options would include Eclipse and NetBeans (both are Java-based IDEs and quite hefty). These should offer options that are closer to phpeditor. From what I understand Eclipse with PDT is a good choice. NetBeans' PHP support is relatively new, but from what I read may well develop into the better choice.
