Just emerge wine, mount your Halflife-CD and run wine SETUP.EXE...

Wrong, wine can run directx (it has built in dx-support (dx8.1 or 8.0)) applications. CS has reported to work with wine almost perfectly.

Wine plays HL/CS just fine, if not much better, than winex does.

Of course I know wineX, which has improved directx support. From WineHQ - Wine Features: Partial DirectX support for games (Direct3D missing)

Half-Life based games support OpenGL and DirectX rendering. Just tell the cstrike.exe executable to run in OpenGL mode by using the following command-line: "wine cstrike.exe -gl -gldrv Default"

Wine can run DriectX apps (but they don't run nearly as fast as OpenGL apps).

I use WineX (small price to pay to not have to reboot into Windows) and it works great. Wine works just as well for Counter Strike.

PS-Next time, search the darn forums, this has already been posted to death.

couldn't someone write a step by step guide to playing CS (I dunno why people even bother - the game sucks IMHO) but getting these dupes each few weeks is just annoying.

So who's up for the challenge (and the fame) of doing a guide so simple your mother could install CS on her Gentoo machine - the guide should of course go in documentation, tips and tricks.

FIGHT DUPES !!!

I don't think a guide will get published, just because the problem is at the same time too simple and too complex. Just to get CS running, all you gotta do is emerge wine, mount the cd then wine /path-to-cdrom/setup.exe. It installs where you want it, then just wine hl.exe and start games.

Now, if there was a guide for how to set up the voice stuff and connect using xqf and all those things, that'd be a long, and ultimately, pointless endeavour. Pointless, simply because next wine might break the menus, or might not work with the upgrading programs from Sierra, or might not work with voice. Search the forums, plenty of talk of all these things, and it all seems to depend on wine version, so a howto might become obsolete in a month.

If you are really in dire need of a howto, I think this is as close as it gets. Helped me, back in the day. :)

Good luck, and if you get stuck, specific questions will be answered on forums.

I had the same problem: Download all the CS/HL patches so that you get the most up-to-date Versions. The error will then be gone.
