The issue that I run into once I have Linux up and installed is how do I make that machine useful to me in my everyday needs.
I have looked through the 'Online package database' from gentoo.org main page. But I don't know what a lot of that does.
I am looking for programs for school (math, chemistry, engineering) and also looking for other programs that others find useful.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks |

There are lots of simmelair/better programs around u used to use on your other system. A good start for us would be a list of programs u used before u switched to linux. I'm sure we are able to give u very good and sometimes better programs for the same usage. _________________ sys0: Athlon64, Corsair TWINX DDR400 (1024mb), GeForce FX5600 256mb, 2x SATA MAxtor 120gig, Plextor 708a, Zalman cooling, Zalman powered, gnomed

I am thinking I want to use Gnome. I have used Ximian in the past, is there anything like that for Gentoo? I appreciate your assistance.
Alright, here is a list of programs that I use pretty frequently...let me know what you think.
ssh client: putty
instant messanger: trillian (for use with MSN & ICQ in one program)
Winamp
FTP
Corel Photo Paint 10
AutoCAD 2002
Adobe Go-Live
Logix (Game)
Browser: IE6 (I don't know if I really like mozilla or opera, looking for others)
Email Client: I use Outlook for IMAP&POP I also sync my iPaq with my machine and it uses outlook to do that.
UT2003 (Game)
Electronic journal for keeping a diary
Maple 8
Adobe Premiere
Radmin (remote tool that I can use to control other PC's at my work, they must have this radmin client up and running also.)
Adobe Acrobat
Ahead Nero for burning CD's
MS Office
WinRar for zip's & rar's
backgammon (Game)
Novell Client
I installed college linux before gentoo checking into other distros and I saw a couple programs that I really liked, they were called:
Kstars: program of the stars (astronomy)
KMplot: math function plotting program
Kalzium: a very nice tool of the periodic table, including the ability to change the temperature and have the table show their state (solid, liquid, gas, etc.)
Let me know what you can help with, this would be a huge help! |

As DE install latest gnome it's very nice and feels fast.
putty -> I would use a terminal window (gnome-terminal) and ssh .
IM -> gaim
winamp -> xmms (but I am kicked to mpd + client now)
ftp -> gftp (ncftp for commandline)
photo paint -> gimp-1.3
Browser -> Mozilla Firebird..
Acrobat -> Acrobat
MS Office -> openoffice + abiword + gnummeric (last 2 are realy good)
Winrar -> file roller
outlook -> evolution 1.4 and up
Nero -> X-cdroast
there are many variantions possible on this..
for most others are linux versions 2.. but I don't know there exact name, so leave that up to somebody else. |

I see that you mentioned Maple 8 as one of the programs that you used under Windows...
I'm not sure about version 8, but on the v9.01 disk that I have, there's a linux version, along with a windows version ( if only more software vendors would follow this example). The linux version installs clean and runs fine, as long as you have some type of jre installed _________________ Linux User 355087 |
