Free/open Heroes of Might and Magic II (HoMM2) engine

Fans of Heroes of Might and Magic II may be interested in this project:

It's an open and portable implementation of the HoMM2 engine, using SDL. You'll need the data files from the original game. The author mentions that it's alpha-quality code, but it's actually pretty playable. The UI and some animations need a little polish, and the AI might need some tweaks, but overall it's a very impressive piece of work that seems to get regular updates.

There is even something similar in the works for Heroes 3.
I thought this thread might be a good place to mention this also. The link to this was found here, this page has a list of remakes and virtual machines.
