Custom LiveCD with nvidia-drivers and some other stuff?

How can I make a customized Gentoo Live CD that uses nvidia-drivers by default and contains some other modifications, like data in my home dir and so on?

I tried the gentoo 2008.0 live cd but 1) it looks somewhat shabby as the highest screen resolution seems to be 1024x768 and 2) I couldn't emerge any additional packages, as there were constant "read-only file system" errors?

Is it at all possible to install things when booted from a livecd? and how can I make these changes permanent?
