When I boot, eth0 starts up just fine using dhcp to get IP and dns and such. This is a laptop, so i frequently take net down, but, if I ever try to bring it back up with /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start it times out on dhcp request. I can also try to run 'dhcpcd eth0' manually, same problem. Any insight? |

When you say you are taking the net down, what exactly are you doing? |

i must admin that is a strange issue. I have a laptop and i do the same thing on a regular basis. Until someone comes up with a better solution could you just un-plug the cable and leave the network up? |

Unfortunatly no, this is just one small step I learned to live with, in a growing problem. I just got my wlan hardware, and want to be able to switch between the two. It doesn't work to have both up at the same time, leading further to the problem is that after a connection or to, the wlan stuff has dhcp timeouts as well. I just figured I would start with one thing at a time. I have also checked for new version of dhcpcd in portage, which i have(i'm not sure if it is ~x86 or not) I noticed there is a net-misc/dhcpcd and a net-mis/dhcp, i'm not sure what the 'dhcp' one is, but can one replace the other? |

as far as that, dhcp is the dhcp server and client. dhcpcd is just the client. |

dhcpcd is a bad dhcp client... I've run into some troubles to get an IP on some networks.... Try to use dhcpclient.

I was hoping someone would tell me dhcpcd was bad, but when you say 'dhcpclient' to you mean net-misc/dhcp-agent? |
