My first attempt with Gentoo on an Asus Eee PC 901. I only seem to have xorg-x11 to choose from when I do "eselect opengl list". What do you with working 3D acceleration have as a second option on that list? 7xx or 900 is probably the same so if you have one of these your input would be appreciated.

That's very kind. I didn't want to spam the forum with all that info. Was only looking for some little hint on what to investigate next but here they are. I'm far from finished with this little rascal so don't laugh too hard. :-)

Some more info... since I'm trying to figure out how things are related.

On my nvidia machine:
Code:
# ls -l /usr/lib/opengl
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 12 maj  2008 global
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 4096 12 apr 11.49 nvidia
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 11 apr 20.19 xorg-x11

On my Eee PC:
Code:
# ls -l /usr/lib/opengl/
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 10 apr 18.09 global
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 10 apr 21.02 xorg-x11

Shouldn't there be an "intel" folder there. What is responsible for creating it? The Intel drivers are installed.

Is that stable, and better than the wiki?

Well... where should I begin - are you asking me what the best optimization flags are? :D

I've been using gcc 4.3 for quite some time now and -march=core2 isn't available in 4.1 which in turn is the base for the wiki. I've discussed this on the gcc mailing lists and the Atom is apparently closer in design to Core2 than Prescott. After all, it will mainly enable a few more instructions. There won't be native scheduling for Atom until gcc 4.5.

-mtune=pentium is still being discussed. It's based on the fact that the Atom is an in-order processor and the last processor of that type Intel made was the original Pentium. I have no benchmarks with this option disabled and I haven't found any online either. The only minor drawback as I understand it is that the compiler won't use CMOV with it. CMOV has historically had a large overhead but according to Intel themselves this has been rectified on later generation CPUs. I still haven't made up my mind if I miss it or not. :)

-mfpmath=sse is simply to force the compiler to produce SSE-code instead of the default 387-code on x86. SSE-instructions on later generation CPUs have also been optimized to use less cpu cycles to load the registers which was a major drawback earlier.

-ftree-vectorize is enabled by default in -O3. The bugs in this optimization was specifically fixed in gcc 4.3. Again I have no benchmarks myself to compare to but this option has been discussed in length for several years so they shouldn't be too hard to find online.

No stability issues though. I'm running arch on all my machines except for gcc, Portage and glibc where I use ~arch.

regards
PP

I'm using Lunar Linux on an Asus eee 1000, with xorg 7.4 and the git intel drivers.

Not sure if I can help with the old software versions you're using, but would need to see /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Huge copy and paste below... (is there a bbcode to make a scroll list?). I didn't reflect yet over how old the Intel drivers in Portage was. What version is in the git sources? Basic things like OGL should presumably work anyway I guess. Most likely I who have overlooked something obvious. Glxgears performs at 60fps compared to 500fps with the Xandros default install so I assume it's using software rendering although I might have screwed something up...

Glxgears performs at 60fps

Oh that's easy - you have vsync on. Run "xrandr" to confirm your refresh rate is 60.

Your xorg log looks fine.

Code:
# xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 600, maximum 1024 x 1024
VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS connected 1024x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 195mm x 113mm
   1024x600       60.0*+
   800x600        85.1     72.2     75.0     60.3     56.2
   640x480        85.0     72.8     75.0     59.9
   720x400        85.0
   640x400        85.1
   640x350        85.1

It seems like a plausible reason. I only have experience with nvidia where I haven't run into this problem with glxgears. Two follow-up questions:

1) The obvious one... how do I turn vsync off? The output in Xorg.0.log above lists four modelines but they all have -vsync defined. Are they involved in this somehow?
2) Is there no "eselect opengl" for the Intel driver? How do I switch to software rendering if I would like to use that theoretically (not that it would ever happen in reality but for arguments sake)?

No. eselect opengl options only exist for closed source drivers. The open-source drivers integrate themselves with mesa, and mesa will accelerate the things it can accelerate and will emulate in software the things it can't.

To test if you're using hardware acceleration, do 'glxinfo|grep Direct' .... I think.

Code:
# glxinfo | grep -i direct
direct rendering: Yes

Quite right...

This is the downside of working with a single brand year after year. I become a complete noob again when I get new hardware in my hands. :D So, back to the vsync issue. I'll google around a bit but if anyone knows the answer I'd appreciate a hint.

Found it myself. Apparently a configuration change that was made in a recent driver version. vblank_mode="0" restores the old behaviour.
Code:
$ vblank_mode="0" glxgears
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
4130 frames in 5.0 seconds = 825.868 FPS
4231 frames in 5.0 seconds = 846.040 FPS
4228 frames in 5.0 seconds = 845.480 FPS
4233 frames in 5.0 seconds = 846.461 FPS
4229 frames in 5.0 seconds = 845.723 FPS

So a nice increase from 500fps -> 850fps by replacing Xandros with Gentoo. Thank you all for your help. It's always good to have people to discuss ones problems and ideas with.

Ah, but glxgears is expected to be slower with the latest and greatest intel driver ;)

Nvidia are light-years ahead of intel, for video cards.
