What does a red F mean in the letters from emerge -p on a package? (In my case emerge -up xv) It doesn't seem to be documented in the man page or the FAQ.

fetch restriction, you have to download the sources yourself and place them in /usr/portage/distfiles/

Thanks. So xv would probably be restricted this way because of its license (I didn't even realise it was shareware before now)?

It means that the ebuild has a RESTRICT="fetch" settings, which means that emerge won't download the sources, you have to do it yourself.
