What tools are there if I want to set up my own IP telephone system? I want to run my own server and let friends connect to it. |

There are several opensource pbx systems available:
- asterisk -- most popular, works with FreePBX (php web app). Easiest to get up and running with a dialplan.
- callweaver (formerly openpbx an asterisk-1.2 fork) Conversion of asterisk-1.2 dialplans is reasonably
straight forward. But newer -1.4 and -1.6 features not available.
see http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/OpenPBX.org%20FAQ
- freeswitch -- beta status, modular design, can handle 10X as many simultaneous calls as asterisk.
Uses an xml-based dialplan which is not compatible with asterisk dialplans.
No gui configurator yet. FreePBX might eventually add freeswitch support. TCAPI is still pre-alpha.
