I've got a Dell Inspiron 4800 w/ATI Rage Mobility. After having emerged X11R6 and Gnome, I emerged the ATI drivers, which compiled the Fire driver and installed it. I ran the config utility, but when startx runs, I get an error message that it cannot find a screen. Screen0 is defined. (*sighs*)
:(

This mean that he didn't have any video drivers it could use.

Did you configure X? (emerge ati won't configure x)

I think you have to use the standard X drivers (use the ati driver it will detect what kind of card it is)

Just some thought though.

Yes, X11R6 is configured. I guess I need to ask whether the Fire driver is the correct one for this card, which lspci sees as an ATI Rage Mobility, Rev A. I made a mistake in my initial post, it's an Inspiron 3800. Can someone also answer another question for me? I've compiled this machine with -march=pentium3, should I be using -march=pentium2 or -march=celeron instead? TIA, I'm getting there, if slowly...
