Im sorta new at this, taken a shot at linux several times in the past with slackware, mandrake and so on. Now i have gentoo 1.4 on my gaming rig and im building a small one for a linux box. Does anybody have any ideas on what the best amd chipset would be? nvida? via? Why?
Im looking at an xp 1600+, shuttle MK35VN, 128 266 kingston, 60 gig hd, 52x cd, onboard video/sound till later and i have a 2nd and a 3rd nic if I need it. Any informed opinions would be appreciated. |

Well, if you want performance take the NVIDIA Chipset, if you like cheap take SIS. Both SIS and VIA have extreme differences between boards from the same series, with VIA you have a 20% chance that the boeard will crash and burn. SIS can be even worse (sometimes about 50% broken boards), but they are so cheap and fast!
You'll have to decide for yourself, but my advice is: Stay away from VIA, don't overclock and your system will be fast enough because of gentoo so 5% faster is not really worth it. Buy a board that has enough connecotrs (LAN, USB) for your needs. |
