PostPosted: Tue Apr 21, 2009 3:59 am    Post subject: [solved] Gentoo 2008.0 on Alpha 1200 - kernel panic Reply with quote

hi folks,

i m having kernel panic about the Mylex DAC960 during boot up

i boot in SRM by ">>>boot dka500 -fl 0"

i tried to "set console serial"
but i m not able to capture the kernel panic screen becoz the output is local to console physically T.T

any tricks to do that?
or what i should do next?

thanks

btw...what i have in my minicom

Code:

P00>>>boot dka500 -fl 0
(boot dka500.5.0.1.1 -flags 0)
block 0 of dka500.5.0.1.1 is a valid boot block
reading 158 blocks from dka500.5.0.1.1
bootstrap code read in
base = 200000, image_start = 0, image_bytes = 13c00
initializing HWRPB at 2000
initializing page table at 1f2000
initializing machine state
setting affinity to the primary CPU
jumping to bootstrap code

I had a similiar problem as i set up Gentoo on a DS20L. IIRC i attached a zero-modem cable to the serial console and connected it to my pc with minicom with the following command at the srm boot menu:

Code:

-flags "root=/dev/ram ramdisk_size=16384 console=ttyS0"

You could check this page, whether you will find some useful information, although its for debian ;)

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/alpha/ch05s01.html.en

greets Stefan

The first thing I'd try is to update the SRM. The latest version is 6.0.

ok...great idea.....
but i have 2 questions

1. my thing is a DEC stuff....meaning it's old....this "hp" alpha is "new" or....em....the "old" stuff is still supported thru many yrs?
2. how can i check if the floppy drive still works properly before this update?...coz i don't want to ....."oops" in between for the floppy drive.....
