The upgrade to X.Org X Server 1.5.3 on my Ultra1 was unsuccessful. I deleted my xorg.conf file before starting the server with startx. Here is my Xorg.0.log:

Code:

From your log file:
Code:
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file

As root and, say, in your /root directory run
Code:
Xorg -configure

This should generate a brand new file /root/xorg.conf.new
Test that
Code:
X -config /root/xorg.conf.net

If all works reasonably well, copy it over to your /etc/X11/ directory.

minor_prophets, I will try your suggestions. I read the upgrade guide and it said you didn't really need a config file any more so I was trying to go that route.

d2_racing, here is emerge --info:

I don't currently have an xorg.conf. Do you mean my old one from the previous working configuration?

Thank you. Everything hal related has been recompiled and I have verified it is running. However, I am still getting the same issue. The Xorg -configure still returns no devices to configure.

What next?

Thanks again for any suggestions.

Ok, can you post your actual /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Also, you should know that with the new feature of Xorg 7.4 and Xorg-Server 1.5, you don't need at all a /etc/X11/xorg.conf

So you should try to startx without any config file actually.

I am trying to start it with no xorg.conf. This is when I get the "No devices to configure. Configuration failed." error. Do you want me to post my old xorg.conf file from before the upgrade?

Hi, your new /etc/X11/xorg.conf should be like this :

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier     "X.org Configured"
        Screen         0 "Screen0"
        Option         "BlankTime" "0"
EndSection

Section "Files"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
EndSection

Section "Module"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "record"
        Load  "xtrap"
        Load  "freetype"
        Load  "type1"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Sun Microsystems"
        #Option       "dpms" "on"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Card0"
        Driver      "suncg6"
        BusID       "SBUS:/sbus@1f,0/cgsix@0,0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device     "Card0"
        Monitor    "Monitor0"
EndSection

Looks like I am missing the suncg6 driver, and it doesn't want to install:

Code:
# emerge --ask --verbose x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N    ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6-1.1.0  USE="-debug" 226 kB
[blocks B     ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6 ("x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6" is blocking x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r5)

Total: 1 package (1 new), Size of downloads: 226 kB
Conflict: 1 block (1 unsatisfied)

 * Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

('installed', '/', 'x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r5', 'nomerge') pulled in by

    >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99 required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-drivers/xf86-video-sunffb-1.2.0', 'nomerge')
    (and 5 more)

('ebuild', '/', 'x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6-1.1.0', 'merge') pulled in by

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked

Is this the correct setting in my make.conf?

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="suncg6"

When I run with no xorg.conf, xorg seems to want to try to pull in the sunffb module.

Hi, can you try that :

Code:

# echo "x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
# emerge -av x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6

This still does not work. I think the suncg6 driver is not compatible with xorg > 1.0.99.

Hi, try that :

Code:

# emerge -pCv x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6

You should remove the old driver and install the latest version.

Hmm, there does not appear to be an old one installed:

Code:
# emerge -pCv x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6

>>> These are the packages that would be unmerged:

--- Couldn't find 'x11-drivers/xf86-video-suncg6' to unmerge.

>>> No packages selected for removal by unmerge

If the suncg6 driver hasn't been updated for xorg-server-1.5.3, you might need to add sunffb and/or vesa to VIDEO_CARDS in order to get X to work. Actually, given the sun stuff is in brackets, it means that those drivers have been dropped since the previous version. So vesa it is.

EDIT - There's a suncg6 driver v 1.1.1 that appears to have been uploaded to the xorg ftp site 3 days ago. So maybe that will be compatible with xorg 1.5.3 and you can revert to using it.
