Not an exact comparison, but when I installed VMware Server 2.0 vmnet was automatically created by the vmware installation process...

Do you need to use VMware? Windows Server 2008 seems to run fine in KVM, and configuring KVM bridges is relatively straightforward.
There are two caveats associated with switching. First, the virtual hardware will change enough that Windows will want to reactivate, if it even boots at all. Second, if VMware is using HVM extensions, then KVM cannot, and vice versa. Thus, you would need to disable hardware assistance for VMware or never run any VMware guests while also running a KVM guest. If you have a large group of guests, the cost of converting all of them to KVM probably outweighs any benefit from simpler networking. |
