hi guys, i've got a nightmare!

i sent my laptop for repair (under warranty) and the new installed motherboard doesn't seem to support "Fan Control" setting under the BIOS configurations - the bios version is the same as before!

is there anyway to hack the m/b or bios to change the temperature trip point for turning on the fan??

this is my lspci:

have you tried using "lm_sensors" and changing the max temperature for your board via "/etc/sensors.conf"?

lm_sensors might be the right package but you will need to use the fancontrol script that comes with it. This may not work for your fan but it is the only linux app that I know of that does this. You use pwmconfig to setup the configuration for the script which will end up in /etc/fancontrol. After you have it working it should be fairly simple to add an init script for it and have it startup automatically.

That's something that IMO, should be left unmolested. The standard feedback control system for the fan is made to work without intervention from extraneous software. I never turn it on, and I never have a problem. If you really want to mess with it, make sure you have things set right in the kernel, and cross your fingers.

If you really want to, "hack the board," I would advise waiting until the warranty is out. OEM's frown on getting such things RMA.

Good luck.

Blessed be!
