Hey all, I could have sworn my Realtek NIC was running at 1000 mbps when I first setup this box, but now it only detects as being cable of 10/100 by ethtool.

The card is a pci-e built in to my mobo :
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)

It's on a Jetway Intel Atom mobo.

I'm using the r8169 driver as a module from the Device Drivers -> Networking -> 1000M section of the kernel config.

I have this same problem with it on 2.6.27 kernel (built into the kernel, not module) and a 2.6.29 kernel (module).

Here is what ethtool says:
Code:

Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
        Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
        Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
        Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                                100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
        Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
        Speed: 100Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: MII
        PHYAD: 0
        Transceiver: internal
        Auto-negotiation: on
        Supports Wake-on: pumbg
        Wake-on: g
        Current message level: 0x00000033 (51)
        Link detected: yes

And yes, it is plugged into a 1Gbps switch. I have other 1Gbp computers in the house that work (different cards though)

Nothing funny coming from dmesg either, just this:
Code:

[   15.390500] r8169: eth0: link up
[   15.390510] r8169: eth0: link up

Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Greg

Are you able to turn off autonegotiation and set it to 1000 manually?

something like:

Code:
ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off

If the lspci notes it as being "fast ethernet" then it'll only do 100M max.

Realtek website lists that part as 100M as well

 Ah - what a fool I am. It is only 100 - Even the item desc on New Egg Says it's 100.

They must have mislabled it when I bought it, because I was always under the impression I had a 1Gb card, which is why I updated my network to 1Gb.

Oh well - thanks for pointing that out. I'll mark this one as solved - dumb user error, PEBKAC (problem exists between keyboard and chair)

Thanks for your help.
