Hi,
I'd like to give a try to KDE 4 on Gentoo.
I've read a Linuxized post ( http://www.linuxized.com/2009/08/kde-4-3-is-here-quick-gentoo-upgrade-guide/ ) and, as the KDE 4 official guide was saying the same, I decided to try the upgrade.
As said in the linuxized post, I understand that there are two files : the first one is for unmasking, the second one is for accepting ~amd64 keyword. I'm on stable gentoo, except a few packages unstable. Although both files seemed to be the same, I grabbed them separetely and, for the "keyword" file, I added manually "~amd64" on each line.

I first tried only to fill the "package.unmask" file. That first seemed to work great, but it wanted to do the upgrade from KDE 3.5.9 to 3.5.10.

Recently, portage requested me to mask "x11-libs/qt:4".
I had installed through dependencies and now portage don't complain anymore. However, I didn't remove it completely and I'm still having qt:3 installed.
I really don't know if I should remove it or not. |

The message saying that I had to mask "qt:4" was in the eselect news, after an emerge process.
I'm really scared of uninstalling something needed by the system if I remove completely qt:4 for example.
I tried to unmask qt:4, with no more luck.

Please note the difference between printer-applet-4.3 and printer-applet:4.3  the second one unmasks the 4.3 SLOTted versions.

The missing USE flag is preventing qt-4.5 to build, and this might cause more confusing errors. If setting the mysql flag isn't enough, you could try to update qt first, then kde.
Also, the unmask file shouldn't be necessary any more, because the ebuilds are only keyworded ~, and no longer masked.

There is no qt-4 needed for KDE4, so yes you can remove it. If you install anything later on that needs qt-4 as a dependency, it will be pulled in. |

I have these qt related flags in USE=
I believe they all came in with the desktop profile. (except qt-webkit is in my make.conf)
I don't use avahi so I don't know about that, but cmake needs USE=qt4. |

I removed qt:4, and, surprise, emerge didn't remove any files. That should have been some sort of meta package, and no file has been removed.
I encountered then a problem with /app-admin/eselect-python and bluez.
For the first one, I keyworded it. For the second, I set -bluetooth in USE in /etc/make.conf. I saw that on the forums.
Now, I have that problem with PyQt4, where a dependency is required but still ~amd64 (PyQt4-4.5.4-r4).
Can I safely keyword that one as well, or is it safer to wait for it's stabilisation ?

Can I safely keyword that one as well, or is it safer to wait for it's stabilisation ?

you have keyworded the entire kde4.3.1... you can safely unkeyword it.

You mean that KDE.4.3.1 is stable AMD64 on portage ?
It's fresh from today I guess.
EDIT : no, you mean that I can safely keyword PyQt4 for installing KDE.4.3.1, that's it ? |

you have installed kde 4.3.1 right? if so, then you can unkeyword pyqt4

Thanks a lot for your help, but I leave the upgrade.
KDE4 is pulling PyQt4, that conflict on 'sip' package with the existing PyQt. This lead me to keyword far more packet that I've imagined and therefore, I think I'll wait the KDE4 to be stable for upgrading.
While trying doing that KDE4 upgrade, I broke my python, I don't want to ~ more my system.

| I took portage 2.2 with the sets from kde-testing overlay (copy the sets directory from the overlay-directory to /etc/portage/) and just copy from the kde-testing overlay the package.keyword file (its in .../Documentation/ in the overlay-directories) for kde 4.3. Then eject again the kde-testing overlay from portage and run emerge @kde and maybe unmask the 1-2 other testing packages and then just wait till everything is been compiled. Its also such easy when upgrading for example from kde 4.2.4 to 4.3.1 i did yesterday. |
