to be simple, what is the difference between
Code:
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install

and
Code:
make dep
make clean modules modules_install


I noticed this in the ALSA guide btw.

basically does the same just that the second line does not make a bzImage which is a tar gz bzip'ed image of the kernel...

so that is pretty useless? I mean, booting won't go right because of it?

its for adding modules, you could make the bzImage too but if your not going to use it why take the compile time?

its nice now with the kernel because in 2.6 they have it so that you dont have to do all the steps.. they are making it much easier and much faster :)

why would I not use the bzImage file? it's needed to boot I believe?
