Just noticed on the "Get Gentoo" page that it says "Warning: The 2008.0 releases are deprecated, and their links will be removed soon."

Is that really true? It doesn't seem like there's anything newer than 2008.0 there.

Yes, 2008.0 is deprecated. Grab some recent livecd of any other distribution and install Gentoo with that, using on of the autobuild-stages(from one of the Gentoo mirrors). The 2008.0 cds and stages are pretty much useless today and bring a lot of hassle when used, so avoid them at all means.

However, the 2008.0 _profile_ is still the default profile.

That first link at the top for http://torrents.gentoo.org/ threw me off. Thanks for your help folks!

But the next questions is: is the minimal install ISO the only ISO available for the 2009 builds? Or is there a more complete one?

Another nice solution, if you want to be able to use a graphical browser while installing (nothing wrong with links btw, I love it, it's just that not everyone is comfortable with that kind of tools anymore) you might consider using the SystemRescueCD as your install CD. It's gentoo based and works really nicely.

I'd recommend using sysresccd regardless. It's a great tool not just for installing gentoo, but for diagnosing and fixing misbehaving PCs.

I was confused too, by that page.

It is not stated there, but I thought the weekly builds were the "unstable" version and the 2008.0 release were the "stable" version, so when I read that the last apparently "stable" release was deprecated I thought the 2009.0 will come really soon, and I wait a long time a 2009.0 release... Probably it should be stated that the recomended release is the weekly build.

Is there any plan to change the current profile to 2009.0 or to something else ?

That's what I would like to know also, we are well into 2009 and the profiles are still last years.

Have to agree, where are the new profile, and I also noticed that hte stable 2008.0 profile has a lot of old packages. I should be able to link to the new profile and then emerge world and go for the most part.

Hi,

Use the weekly builds for up to date Gentoo LiveCD's.

Otherwise, http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page (Gentoo Based) provides also a nice LiveCD to install Gentoo, plus a bunch of nice tools for diagnostics.

Regards,
Maxime

Hi,

I don't want to be rude, but if the 2008.0 is deprecated, simply remove the links. Alternatively, I propose to replace them by a weekly, a one well tested, say three months ago.

The point is when you browse the web, you don't read everything. I had to install a Gentoo on my office laptop, after having installed Gentoo at home some years ago. It appeared to me natural to get the lastest release instead of my old 2006.0 CD. So I went directly to the download pages, read nothing, even if I could check 5' ago there is actually a big warning on the deprecation of 2008.0.

Anyway, I thing the install went good, even if I have problems, they are not expected to be release concern, but video driver concern. I partitionned with GParted live CD, and when on Gentoo 2008.0 liveCD, I openned a konsole, set the root password, su root, and perform the install from there.

Right, so far we only do minimal ISOs. We're looking at doing the full graphical LiveCDs/DVDs at a later date. Perhaps just one or two such releases per year, or when there's an important new bit of hardware that we need to support.
please don't do it - the installer is always a mess, and if you just want a graphical environment, sysresccd is good enough... really not worth it to waste resources there.

In fact, a LiveCD is already out there, it's SystemRescueCD.

Why don't add a Xorg-Server support to the already existing Gentoo minimal CD.

Also, maybe a collaboration with SystemRescueCD should be a good idea. Why not use their instead of doing 2 differents project that has the same gold, installing and debugging an existing Gentoo box.

Stop thinking as for others linux distros, there's no 2009 because we don't care the version of gentoo you will install, when you do the install you'll get the latest one. (dot)
The computer i use to write this was install in 2006 (can't remember when, but i have files from august 2006 in it), and my gentoo is the latest version i've got from my last sync.
You can use an old gentoo cd (if it works with your hardware), or any livecd. As long as your hardware is support and that you could chroot.
The 2008.0 aren't deprecated because of the year, but because of the graphical installer (too buggy to be usable) that is in it.

Switching from a distro release to another one could get two advantages (i have in mind)
1/ getting more recent (still not the latest) versions of programs, like going from gnome v2.10 to gnome v2.26 (if you're distro doesn't provide some kind of updating mechanism for the gnome package)
2/ getting latest flavor a distro is made, like for example (really an example, pure speculation here) if mandriva default desktop for 2008 is kde and the new 2009 will be default with gnome)

For 1/ gentoo have the update mechanism, so it's not need to have a new release as your gentoo is always the latest
For 2/ gentoo doesn't have a real flavor, as you build it yourself, you'll be kde or gnome or both or any desktop you wish, so again, it's not need.

The only thing that is close to a /2 is that develloppers need some basic tools to make your "core" gentoo working, and they will force them thru profiles.

I hope it makes things clearer (well, with my english i'm really not sure about it !).

One question of concern for me please : is the 2008.0 liveCD "deprecated" just for bugs in the graphic installer ? Other said, if I use this liveCD just as a live CD and perform the install through a Konsole but still with the 2008.0 released tarballs, is it ok ? Or do these tarballs buggy too ?

EDIT : at this point, tarballs looks good.

EDIT : Install finished with KDE. It works great.

Maybe my question dublicate somthing, but when will be LiveCD 2009 of Gentoo?
For me it's very important, because I can't spend some hours to install gentoo from minimal cd, and liveCD 2008 make me many problems with my new laptop.
Thank you

Okay, I may add to the confusion more but clear this up for me.

A few days ago I downloaded a 2008.0-r1. Is that also being removed or is that the update?

... and even more confusion? - not sure.
There are now 2009 installCD's in the /ARCH/autobuilds/current-iso/ directory of the Get Gentoo link

I suspect those are good ones. :)
