Hello!
I would like to configure network access to install gentoo on my system but there is problem as I only have wireless internet and can't use wired connection. I tried steps in handbook to install wireless card but it doesn't work so I was wondering is it possible to share internet access using switch or router (i have both) from my laptop that has wireless internet. My laptop has vista on it.
So the diagram looks something like this:
Internet ---> Laptop (host) ---> Switch/Router ---> PC (the one that needs wired access)
Would this be even possible? If yes could someone help me out with creating such connection? If it is not possible what are my other options? _________________ L1N64-SLI WS/B

twister666,
Try SystemRescueCD as your starting point for a Gentoo install. It has much better support for wireless than the Gentoo CDs.
Its also Gentoo based.
Follow the handbook normally if it brings up your wireless network _________________ Regards,

I forgot to mention that for some reason my wireless card is not stable under windows so this could be my hardware problem. If it is possible to connect my main pc to internet through my laptop with switch or router with wires it would solve all problems. _________________ L1N64-SLI WS/B

Well, it might in theory be possible if your laptop has two NICs (2 wire OR 1 wireless, 1 wired) but you would have to set it up as such correctly on the laptop which might be a bit of a pain depending on how experienced you are.
Another option is http://dd-wrt.com in client bridge mode (see http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge and such). This will efectively allow you to plug into the secondary router as if it were a switch of sorts -- efectively utilizing the wireless connection with only a wired NIC on the actual computer itself. If you go this route, hit up the dd-wrt forums and ask them what version they recommend. Often the official releases are way behind and not the best, nor really stable. The development versions are usually far better.
Really though, I'd just continue working to get it to work natively. I have a WMP110 v1.0 myself which was really messed up under windows, however it is mostly okay under linux. You never know sometimes. |

Davidm I will try your method since I have 2 pcs without wireless cards and one with unstable wireless connection so this might fix my problems. If I get it fixed I will update Thanks _________________ L1N64-SLI WS/B
