I have a laptop with Intel 915GM and this laptop's display seems to have insufficient contrast resulting in eye strain etc. In MS windows driver settings there is an option allowing for (software-like) contrast tuning that really helps a little... Could I find something similar in xf86-video-intel or xorg-server?

yendy,

I don't think that there is a client utility for the intel driver. You could try tweaking gamma settings (not contrast but it might be workable for you) either in xorg.conf or with something like kgamma.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice.
"Gamma" settings in xorg.conf could range: 0.1-10.0 What value would you recommend?

I have none set so they'd be defaulting to 1.0. Bear in mind, I am not looking at your monitor so I have no idea, but for a little added contrast, I think you could start with small changes, say 0.95 on each channel. If you are using kde, try kgamma or just use xgamma client (cli - man xgamma) - they'll make the process a whole lot easier. Without them you'll be restarting X after each change.

Cheers

So as the "rule of the thumb" we could assume values <1 increase contrast, while >1 make color range more fluent, couldn't we?

Yes you can't see my monitor but remember the results could be observed only after few hours of looking at display. The first impression often have little to do with the eye strain felt only after longer period... So some diretions are needed where to go? ;)
