Hey all,

Been racking my brain on this one for awhile with no solution and hope somebody can give some new insight.

I have ALSA and Nforce2 audio working great using the Intel driver. But xmms will not play a thing. I do have the ALSA xmms pluggin installed. Every other app will play sound such as mplayer, xine, etc... xmms is the only one that will not work.

I have emerged it hundred different times, with different USE flags. the only thing I have not done yet is roll back to an older version of xmms (I'm trying to lean how to do that with portage right now)

Anybody have seen this before or have some other ideas?e

Sounds silly but did you configure the alsa plugin in the xmms options?

Or as an alternative (if running KDE), did you try emerging and setting up the arts plugin for XMMS?

Cant emerge xmms-artsd for some reason even did a sync

Code:
styles root # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge media-plugins/xmms-arts
Calculating dependencies
!!! all ebuilds that could satisfy "media-plugins/xmms-arts" have been masked.

!!! Error calculating dependencies. Please correct.

(I already post this the 4th time. Perhaps this is something for the FAQ)

Killing Arts is not a good solution.

The problem is that Arts catches the /dev/dsp and therefore no other prog with (PCM) sound output can use this device.

Two solutions:
1) Use special plugins for Arts (the plugin for XMMS is quite buggy and therefore masked)
2) Use "artsdsp", e.g. "artsdsp xmms". Artsdsp re-directs the sound output to arts. Hint: You don't have to start the programs via konsole if you add "artsdsp" to the sound stuff in the KDE menu.

If mozilla+Flash should produce sound, but it does not -> try "artsdsp mozilla"

I am having this same problem. If I start XMMS or even a game like UT2003 I have no sound, and in the case of XMMS it locks up. But if kill artsd then sound starts working in both. I tried the artsdsp before XMMS when I started it, and it did the same thing. I tried to emerge xmms-arts, but it said all packages were masked and that was with trying to ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86". Any suggestions or help would be great, until then I guess I will turn off arts.

ya having the same thing happen using the correct keywords but still it says it is masked.. this a bug ???

Also the only way I can get xmms to play is to killall -9 artsd even when it is open.. As soon as I kill it I get sound... Never seen this before in KDE...

I just turned arts off, and restarted KDE and it worked fine. So there is definately a bug somewhere. And I am using the most recent version that can be downloaded from emerge...this is very strange. I wish it would work.

artsdsp before xmms??
You mean "artsdsp [enter] xmms [enter]" ?
What I meant is "artsdsp xmms [enter]".
And ensure that you use the OSS output plugin in XMMS.

I also use KDE/XMMS and it works perfectly. And everyone I told about this also said that it works.
