SDL Init Error

I wanted to setup a Dell PIII Workstation as a dedicated game server, so I installed Gentoo on it... well after installing Descent3, when running the executable it reported requiring Xfree Libraries. I emerged xfree, but now when I try to run Descent3, it reports this:

SDL: SDL_Init() failed! rc == (-1).

I emerged libsdl, but this still happens.
