That's right.
I'm trying to setup Gentoo on my dad's file server, right?
No go.
I've tried the Gentoo 1.4final LiveCD (Athlon XP) in hopes of installing Gentoo. No go. I tried the 1.4_rc4 LiveCD, no go.
I'm figuring that it's a problem with the internet connection being on the switch.
Here's the layout
PIII PC
Athlon Tbird (file server) > Switch -> (going to) Router with cable modem connection on it
My PC (Athlon XP) -> Router with cable modem on it
My PC and the file server have the exact same network cards. Netgear FA310TX 10/100mbps, tulip chipset.
I dunno how to fix this, I tried dhcpcd eth0, /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start, /etc/init.d/net.eth0 restart, net-setup eth0, net-setup dhcpcd eth0, etc. All no go. Please help.

Can you post what error messages or symptoms you are seeing? And just to clarify, is this how your network is setup?
Code: | ISP
|
Cable Modem/Router

Switch Your PC

That's exactly how it's setup.
No error messages, or anything. Just plain no networking.
What I did to have a temp fix of it was take the network cable from the switch that was on the router downstairs and plugged it into the server.
Code: | ISP
|
Cable modem/router
| |
Server My PC |

Since you can fix the problem by hooking the file server straight to the routher it's obviously not the cable.
But then again it is.
If your switch has an uplink port you should plug the router into that. If it doesn't have a uplink port you need a crossover cable, otherwise the signals from the router to the switch go nowhere.
That's what the solution looks like to me anyway. |
