I found something very interesting today:
http://www.half-life2.org.uk/check.php

These are my results:
Processor: Your processor is fine.
Graphics : You should be able to play in 1024x768 maybie more depending on the chipset, upgrading to better chipsets such as Radion 9800, and GeForce FX 5800 will provide better results.
System Memory: You have enough RAM
Operating System: You will be able to play on Linux, however you need to get the Linux version! :D
Architecture: No Problems

I hope this is something official.

What? Is this for real? Or some lunatic webmaster giving me false hopes? I'm really suspicious about this one. Perhaps they are confusing the Linux server with a client?

I really doubt this is true.

I'm going to wait for official word before I even begin to get my hopes up.

edit: I sent an email to the admin of the site asking for confirmation and his source of information. I'll report back here if i receive a response.

From the site:

Quote:
We have made this simple test to help you work out how well your computer will run the Half-Life 2 game, please note that this is unofficial and as accurate as humanly possible. This is not a guarantee that it will work, only an indication of its likelihood. Don't forget the Official Valve benchmark tool will be a much more accurate test of how your computer will run the Half-Life 2 game when its available.

I hope it is true anyway... :?

I think it's some kind of sick sarcasm... first of all... HL2 is VERYYYYY dependent on DirectX. As you know, it would have to be ported to OpenGL, that takes time and money.

According to that developer Source is not heavily dependent on DirectX... Apparently Source was designed in such a way as to leave open the possibility of a future OpenGL implementation. So a Linux port is possible, if the people who want it would quit beating the bishop and write to Valve.

I received a response from the admin of half-life.co.uk

Quote:
Hi,
Unfortunatly the nobbins who wrote the script for me failed to note that the
port will be for the server version of Half-Life 2, however there are
unconfirmed rumors of a Linux client, as a Linux user myself I am strongly
in favour of a Client version.

Apoligies for the confusion, I gave Roger (the coder) a good smack round the
head.

They better make a linux port of the client. Not going to buy it otherwise. But I don't matter so they won't listen to me or anyone.

I just did it, they seem to have changed it in response to that email above:

Quote:

I think we should boycott 'em. Don't use Linux to support there servers unless they give us a client port too. It's not fair that we should be responsible for holding up their netcode when they can't even be bothered supplying the Linux community with possibly one of the best games this year.

Of course, meh. I've got a WinXP partition sitting around for only one reason: To play Half-Life 2.

You couldn't possibly boycott them... don't even try. All those ISP's/Game server hosting companies out there will still run it

But he most certainly does have a point about that.
Why do they want the Linux community to make sure everyone (that uses Windows) can play on a good server, and don't they allow that (partially) same Linux community to also play the game themselves?

Life ain't fair :(

This is what it said for me...

Processor: Your processor is fine.
Graphics : You should be able to play in 1024x768 depending on your card, consider upgrading if you have an older chipset such as GeForce 3 Ti
System Memory: You have enough RAM
Operating System: There are rumors of a Linux CLIENT port, there will however be a server port.
Architecture: No Problems

So, now it says something different...lol

Check this out.
Code:
GD: It's obvious that the Source Engine takes advantage of certain DX9 features, can you explain what those features are?

Gabe: High-dynamic range rendering (HDR), bump-mapped characters, soft shadows, improved full-scene anti-aliasing are the most interesting. In the future our enhancements to Source will all be DX9 specific (we won't be creating DX8 equivalents).

dude, they're even gonna cut the portability to DX8!!! How obvious can it be that there's no chance in hell this will get ported to linux. But hey, I signed the petition and sent my letter overseas to kosamae. We can't say we didn't try :(

Gabe has already said, flat out, that they have no plans for a Linux port.

I pretty much have no hope of ever seeing a major title (barring Savage..) come out with a Linux client. I mean, the userbase of potential gamers in Linux, AFAIK, is smaller than the potential userbase of Mac gamers, and we all know how long it takes for Mac ports to come out....
